2023 MLS Regular Season: Inter Miami 2-1 Atlanta United
Josef Martinez ended his scoring drought with a brace against his former side to lift La Rosanegra to a second straight win
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Josef Martinez just ended his frustrating goal-scoring drought, and he did so in storybook fashion.
Martinez opened his Inter Miami account at long last on Saturday night, bagging a second-half brace to lift the South Florida side to a 2-1 victory over his former team, Atlanta United, at Drv Pnk Stadium.
Inter Miami had to ward off a stoppage-time rally attempt while playing with 10 men after an 84th-minute red card to Franco Negri and 92nd-minute goal from Andrew Gutman, but the defense held up to ensure that Martinez’s performance proved decisive.
Phil Neville’s men moved to 4-0-6 on the year with the win, pushing up into 10th place in the Eastern Conference.
Inter Miami faces a short turnaround, as they play at home again on Tuesday vs. the Charleston Battery in a U.S. Open Cup affair.
