2023 U.S. Open Cup: Inter Miami 2 (5) - (3) 2 Miami FC
La Rosanegra survived the second-ever Miami Clasico after scoring a pair of late equalizers en route to prevailing on penalty kicks
MIAMI — If you heard a loud sound near FIU Stadium late on Wednesday night, it was probably Inter Miami fans and head coach Phil Neville’s collective exhale.
Inter Miami avoided adding an embarrassing elimination to its ongoing 2023 woes by surviving Miami FC, 5-3, on penalty kicks in a dramatic and emotional Miami Clasico in the third round of the U.S. Open Cup. La Rosanegra made all five of its takes in the tense shootout, including Kamal Miller’s decisive effort, but only after coming up with two late equalizers vs. the determined crosstown foe.
Shanyder Borgelin netted Inter Miami’s first tying goal near the end of regulation with a nodded effort at the back post, and the second came via a Ryan Sailor header in the dying minutes of extra time. Sailor’s goal was the first of his career.
While Inter Miami advanced to the tournament’s Round of 32 with the final result, the draw also set a new franchise record for consecutive matches without a victory. Phil Neville’s men are now winless in their last seven games across all competitions.
The struggling Herons will return to the field for the third time in eight days this Saturday, visiting the Columbus Crew at Lower.com Field in Columbus, Ohio, in an MLS regular season affair.
Miami FC: Christian Sorto (Claudio Repetto) 3’
Inter Miami: Shanyder Borgelin (Jean Mota) 89’
Miami FC: DeAndre Yedlin (Own Goal) 116’
Inter Miami: Ryan Sailor (Franco Negri) 118’
Good write up! Do we see Leo and Josef up top versus Columbus? We need the fire power if any sort of result is expected.
