Atlanta United 2-1 Inter Miami
The South Florida side could not hold onto a lead in a road loss that served as a significant blow to the team's already-slim playoff hopes
Inter Miami is still mathematically alive, but the already-slim chances of making the playoffs have almost vanished.
A first-half goal from Gonzalo Higuain was not enough on Wednesday night for Inter Miami, which surrendered two goals after halftime to fall, 2-1, to Atlanta United at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Higuain scored from a penalty in the 32nd minute to give the Herons the lead, but the South Florida side could not hold onto the lead en route to losing for the first time in three matches.
Luiz Araujo orchestrated Atlanta United’s comeback, scoring the equalizer off a free kick in the 59th minute before setting up Josef Martinez’s winner 14 minutes later.
The result left Inter Miami six points shy of the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference with two games left in the year, but the team’s destiny is not completely in its hands. Three other teams, two of which have a game in hand, can eliminate Inter Miami from contention if they win just one of their remaining matches.
