Inter Miami 1-0 San Jose Earthquakes
Jean Mota's early golazo was enough to give a wasteful South Florida side its second road win of the season
It was not easy and lots of chances to put the game away were squandered, but Inter Miami has its second road win of the season at long last.
A wasteful Inter Miami used a 12th-minute golazo from Jean Mota to pick up a 1-0 victory over the San Jose Earthquakes at PayPal Park in San Jose, California, on Wednesday night. Mota scored his first MLS goal and second across all competitions this year with a shot from distance, using the outside part of his left foot to pick out the top right corner of the net.
The Herons had many chances to add to the lead, but poor finishing from a bevy of players kept the game within reach for the Earthquakes. Fortunately for Inter Miami, a resolute defense bounced back from this past weekend’s eight-goal draw with FC Cincinnati by delivering its first clean sheet in more than two months.
The victory, which saw both Gonzalo Higuain and Leonardo Campana removed due to injury concerns, pushed Inter Miami up into eighth place in the Eastern Conference with 29 points. That amount is tied with seventh-placed Charlotte FC, but Phil Neville’s men trail the expansion side in the standings due to the wins tiebreaker.
Inter Miami, which has eight victories compared to Charlotte FC’s nine, last prevailed on the road on April 16 via a 1-0 triumph over the Seattle Sounders.
