Inter Miami Player Ratings: Federico Higuain, Makoun impress in historic win vs. Toronto FC
Good performance levels came in abundance for Inter Miami in the convincing midweek victory
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — It took longer than Inter Miami would have liked, but the team just got back to winning ways. In historic fashion, no less.
Inter Miami ended a six-game losing streak on Wednesday night by defeating Toronto FC, 3-0, and the match at Drv Pnk Stadium was every bit as one-sided as the scoreline indicated. The Herons scored early and never looked back, posting the biggest victory in franchise history.
Naturally, good individual performance levels resulted in the convincing triumph. Federico Higuain and Christian Makoun were among the standouts in the rout, but several other players like Leandro Gonzalez Pirez, Lewis Morgan, and Gregore also played well.
Here are the Inter Miami Player Ratings after the lopsided win over Toronto FC:
Nick Marsman (7.5) — Made four solid saves, including one very good low parry in the first half, to help post the team’s first clean sheet in seven games.
Kelvin Leerdam (7) — Looked much more comfortable playing in his natural right-back position, avoiding the type of defensive lapses that have plagued him of late while also getting forward well and passing precisely with a 91.5% completion rate.
Leandro Gonzalez Pirez (8) — Delivered another strong outing at the back, with his lone blemish being the second half yellow card that rules him out of Saturday’s game.
Christian Makoun (8.5) — Scored the side’s first goal off a corner kick this year with a well-taken finish, came close to netting again later, and held his own defensively.
Brek Shea (6.5) — A solid tactical showing in which he took care of business by locking down his flank while not projecting forward all that much.
Jay Chapman (6.5) — Soldiered through an injury to positively impact both sides of the ball in the first half, but had to come off at the break.
Gregore (8) — The most involved player in the game with a whopping 109 touches, he finished as the most precise passer in the team’s starting lineup while also being very committed defensively with a number of good interventions.
Indiana Vassilev (5.5) — Did lots of running to help cover ground and showed effort, but was not all that involved or dangerous in the attack.
Federico Higuain (8.5) — Authored the winner with a finish that was not as easy as it looked, helped generate better attacking sequences with his movement and quick passes, and had a hand in the own goal with his delivery.
Lewis Morgan (7) — Made a case to return to his natural winger role on a permanent basis by adding to the attack with confident and energetic runs from more advanced positions while also helping to force an own goal.
Gonzalo Higuain (6) — Played the No. 9 role and while he was not that threatening he delivered the ball that resulted in the side’s first goal from a corner this year.
Blaise Matuidi (7.5) — Turned in a strong 45-minute shift off the bench, passing very well and looking as engaged defensively as he has in some time.
Robbie Robinson (5.5) — Involved up top after coming on, but lacked finishing and overall sharpness.
Rodolfo Pizarro (5.5) — Helped generate some danger as a substitute while still not making enough of a case for a return to the lineup.
Julian Carranza (5.5) — Only had eight touches, but one of them should have resulted in a goal on a play that Robinson failed to capitalize on.
Sami Guediri (5.5) — Picked up where Shea left off by holding down the left flank during the final 11 minutes.
Phil Neville (8.5) — His decision to be more attack-minded and use a system that better suits the players’ strengths worked wonders, as did inserting Federico Higuain into the lineup while dropping Matuidi.
