Inter Miami Player Ratings: Gonzalo Higuain stands above rest in latest lopsided loss
The star striker was the team's best player in a second straight blowout defeat
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Inter Miami was hoping to bounce back, but it fell once again with an empathic thud.
Wednesday night marked the second consecutive ugly defeat for Inter Miami, which suffered a frustrating 5-1 rout at home vs. Nashville SC. The lopsided loss at Drv Pnk Stadium was every bit as bad as the final score indicated, too, as most players had very mixed to poor performances for the shorthanded South Florida side.
Star striker Gonzalo Higuain was one of the Herons that showed well in the game, not only because he scored but because he also constantly looked for the ball in order to make things happen. Too few others played at level, though.
Here are the Inter Miami Player Ratings after the humbling midweek match:
Nick Marsman (2) — His worst showing since joining the team, making mistakes that led to goals and failing to provide his normal level of security in between the pipes.
Lewis Morgan (5) — Provided occasional good attacking moments while also not looking fully dialed in defensively.
Kelvin Leerdam (4.5) — Had his struggles, but was the best of three centerbacks after coming up with a few interventions that included a great last-ditch tackle.
Gregore (2.5) — Tried to make do playing out of position with his usual fight and energy, but did not look comfortable and was needlessly sent off late.
Christian Makoun (3) — A lack of understanding with Kieran Gibbs forced the young Venezuelan into more defensive actions, which he struggled with in addition to his touches and passes.
Kieran Gibbs (2) — It may have been a case of not being fit after just returning from injury, but his erratic defending created acres of space that Nashville SC exploited time and again.
Jay Chapman (4.5) — Helped generate some good attacks with nice ideas and passes forward, but a turnover led to the third goal and he was not good enough defensively.
Blaise Matuidi (4) — Also had issues recovering the ball in the midfield and did not help generate too many positive attacking sequences when in possession.
Julian Carranza (3) — Lackluster playing out of position and rusty in his start since early July, generating very little danger while also fouling a team-high four times.
Gonzalo Higuain (6.5) — Scored a well-taken goal after pulling off a great 1-2 with Rodolfo Pizarro, showed plenty of effort, and tried to lift the team with his play.
Rodolfo Pizarro (5) — Created two of the most dangerous looks with his passing, but a turnover from him led to the fourth goal and he drifted in and out of the match.
Brek Shea (4.5) — The sub provided an upgrade at left wingback, looking better with and without the ball up until the end when he was beaten for the fifth and final tally.
Robbie Robinson (5) — More threatening in the attacking third than Carranza despite not having an abundance of touches.
Sami Guediri (N/A) — Only played three minutes and change in his first appearance since May.
Phil Neville (2) — There were some individual errors from players that were costly, but the makeshift defense he went with lasted just six minutes before conceding and there also seemed to be a general lack of desire in the latest disjointed performance.
