Inter Miami Player Ratings: Gregore best of poor bunch in home finale loss to New York City FC
The central midfielder was one of few players to deliver a decent overall showing in the 3-1 loss vs. NYCFC
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — The outcome of Inter Miami’s 2021 season has been determined, with New York City FC hammering the final nail in the coffin.
Inter Miami played the last home game of the campaign this past Saturday, and things ended in rough fashion via a 3-1 loss to New York City FC. The game at Drv Pnk Stadium was a tale of two halves for the South Florida side, which competed well in the opening stanza before coming undone in the second.
That said, the overall individual performances still left plenty to be desired. Gregore was the best Heron in the game, but that he was not as influential as he tends to be shows just how low the collective standard was in this one.
Here are the Inter Miami Player Ratings after the loss to NYCFC:
Nick Marsman (6) — Put out some fires but overall had limited involvement in his 29 minutes, coming out with an injury that will likely keep him out of the season finale.
Nicolas Figal (5.5) — Defended well at right back to start, got forward effectively, and scored the team’s lone goal before losing energy and concentration in the second half.
Leandro Gonzalez Pirez (4.5) — Actively broke things up, but had an awful unforced turnover that led to the opener and could have done better on the second goal.
Chrisitan Makoun (4.5) — Mostly serviceable before having positional issues late on, as evidenced by the second and third goals when he was pulled well out of his spot.
Brek Shea (5) — Should have stepped up to press the dribbler on the first goal in what was an overall pedestrian effort that saw him make little impact in the attack.
Gregore (6) — Not as big of a force as he usually is in the center of the park, but he turned in his usual levels of effort and commitment.
Blaise Matuidi (5.5) — Was one of the team’s best players in the first half before struggling mightily in the second when the game got stretched, most notably on the game-winner in which he failed to properly track his runner.
Indiana Vassilev (5.5) — Started brightly by showing for and getting on the ball to try and make things happen, though ultimately he drifted out of the game.
Federico Higuain (5.5) — May have been impacted by the emotion of playing the final game of his solid career, but was not his sharpest despite coming close to scoring on a heck of a half-volley attempt.
Lewis Morgan (4) — It is not usual to see him get pulled at halftime, but he lacked his usual energy due to apparent heave legs and was largely unthreatening in an atypical showing.
Gonzalo Higuain (4) — Wasted his latest good look on goal by not getting enough placement or power on a chance that would have given the team the lead, and was overall subpar.
John McCarthy (5.5) — Came on in emergency duty and made a good save in addition to cutting off the angle well on another threatening play, but was not really to blame on any of the three goals.
Robbie Robinson (4.5) — Did not really make his presence felt during his second-half shift in place of Morgan.
Rodolfo Pizarro (4.5) — Added very little to the attack after coming on, though he did have one good shot on target late that was saved.
Kelvin Leerdam (5) — Competent during his 14 minutes on the field without being overly involved.
Jay Chapman (4.5) — Another substitute who was unable to make a positive impact, even failing to show proper conviction when tracking back on the third goal.
Phil Neville (5) — His team competed well in the first half and should have taken the lead, but things unraveled quickly in the second due to some very poor positional play and defensive transitioning.
