Inter Miami Player Ratings: Makoun, Shea save themselves from disastrous display
The two defenders were among very few to perform respectably in the lopsided loss to the New York Red Bulls
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — This was disastrous, this was dire, this was dreadful.
Inter Miami suffered a significant setback in the push for the playoffs on Friday night after getting both demolished and humbled by the dominant New York Red Bulls to the tune of 4-0. The South Florida side was outworked and outplayed from whistle to whistle in the game at Drv Pnk Stadium, with very few players saving themselves from the collective nightmare.
Christian Makoun and Brek Shea turned in respectable shifts, but Nicolas Figal, Leandro Gonzalez Pirez, and Nick Marsman were among those that had matches to forget as the previously resolute defense came undone while the attack underwhelmed yet again.
Here are the Inter Miami Player Ratings following Friday’s ugly defeat:
Nick Marsman (3) — Committed a goalkeeping cardinal sin by failing to cover his near post on the opener, but made some saves to prevent the result from being worse.
Lewis Morgan (3.5) — Failed to attack the bouncing ball on the second goal, and was largely invisible with only 15 touches in 45 minutes as the team rarely played down his side.
Leandro Gonzalez Pirez (2) — Looked as fatigued as anyone, playing a part in three of the goals while also picking up a needless yellow that rules him out of the next game.
Nicolas Figal (1) — His 38th-minute ejection summed up a woeful night in which he lost his individual duels, had poor touches, and was involved in the first two tallies.
Christian Makoun (5.5) — Could have done better on the second goal, but put out his share of fires with the type of determination that the team could have used more of.
Brek Shea (5.5) — Held up defensively until the fourth finish while also not providing much to the attack.
Gregore (4) — Was stuck chasing shadows for much of his 56-minute outing, as the relentless Red Bulls overran the midfield.
Blaise Matudi (4) — Also had trouble coping with the opponent’s energy and high press, struggling on both sides of the ball.
Rodolfo Pizarro (3) — Tried finding the game by moving into different areas, but held onto the ball too much and never generated any danger.
Gonzalo Higuain (3) — Lots of sloppy touches that killed attacks during his shift, though he hit a nice free kick that should have been nodded home.
Robbie Robinson (3) — Wasted a golden chance to tie the game at 1-1 on that aforementioned set piece, and was yanked after Figal’s ejection.
Kelvin Leerdam (2.5) — Physically outmatched by the bigger Fabio on the two second-half headers, and did not provide much going forward.
Indiana Vassilev (3.5) — Entered to start the second half when the game was 2-0 with a man disadvantage, but had a measly eight touches during his 45-minute cameo.
Jay Chapman (4.5) — Like his midfield counterparts, was unable to do much to win the battle in the center of the park after subbing on.
Julian Carranza (N/A) — Had too few touches after entering late in vastly unfavorable circumstances.
Federico Higuain (N/A) — Another player who came into proceedings when the game was practically over and did not see much of the ball.
Phil Neville (1) — The lineup selection was wrong and filled with too many fatigued players, as he acknowledged after the game, but the team was tactically inferior and once again largely lifeless in possession.
