Julian Gressel reveals trade talks between agent, Inter Miami
The midfielder disclosed on his podcast that a move away from the South Florida side is being discussed
Julian Gressel has fallen out of favor at Inter Miami, so much so that talks of an exit have begun.
Gressel revealed on his Player/Manager podcast this week that his agent and Inter Miami have tabled discussions over a possible trade that would send the midfielder to a team that would give him more minutes. The 31-year-old Gressel was limited to a substitute role during preseason and has yet to see the field under manager Javier Mascherano in the South Florida side’s three official matches across all competitions.
“There is obviously the side of it where I am not part of the plans now or if I am not part of the plans this year, then so be it,” said Gressel. “My agent has had some good conversations with the club and I am certainly hopeful that we can kind of find a solution together that kind of works for everybody."
The MLS veteran who signed with Inter Miami in 2024 to reunite with then-head coach Gerardo ‘Tata’ Martino continued on his podcast by saying that he would prefer to stay within the Eastern Conference.
“I think that would be very much what we would want as a family, but I do not really want to get too specific about different teams at this point,” said Gressel. “Obviously I would be lying if I said we did not have any preferences or anything like that. My agent is having those conversations, and they have been really good, especially with the club here in Miami.
“Where that leads to, we will see."
Gressel may not have revealed the names of any teams who are keen on landing him, but the New England Revolution are likely a candidate. Gressel drew interest from New England while he was a free agent last year prior to signing with Inter Miami, he met his wife at Providence College in nearby Rhode Island, and she still has family in that area.
Regardless of where Gressel winds up, a sizable amount of Targeted Allocation Money (TAM) will be freed up if Inter Miami trades him. The former MLS champion made just north of a million dollars last season, and is one of six TAM players currently on the Herons’ roster.
It has been reported that Inter Miami is likely going to have to pay some of Gressel’s hefty salary for this season for a deal to materialize with any other team. How much of an appetite there is for that is unknown, but what is clear right now is that Gressel is surplus to requirements in South Florida.
“I think we definitely want to stay on the East Coast,” said Gressel. “I have mentioned that before and that obviously means within the Eastern Conference.”
