New York City FC 3-0 Inter Miami
The South Florida side was dominated from the run of play in what proved to be the final game of Gonzalo Higuain's illustrious career
Inter Miami’s playoff run is over. So too is Gonzalo Higuain’s decorated career.
Inter Miami’s 2022 season ended with a thud on Monday night, as the South Florida side surrendered three second-half goals en route to losing, 3-0, to New York City FC in their first-round meeting at a rainy Citi Field.
Three different players found the back of the net for NYCFC in the lopsided affair, with Gabriel Pereira and Maximiliano Moralez scoring six minutes apart off feeds from Santiago Rodriguez before Heber added a stoppage-time tally.
Higuain, who announced earlier this month he would retire at season’s end, thought he had scored the opener for Inter Miami in the first half. His clinical finish to the near post was immediately called off, however, due to an offside call that the Herons disagreed with.
The Argentine striker started and went the distance in the defeat, and was visibly emotional after the final whistle as he walked off the field as a professional player for the last time.
