FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — This was not the finish that Federico Higuain and Inter Miami were hoping for.
Inter Miami was officially eliminated from playoff contention on Saturday afternoon after losing, 3-1, to New York City FC in the South Florida side’s last home game of the 2021 season. Valentin Castellanos led the way for NYCFC at Drv Pnk Stadium with two goals and an assist, while Nicolas Figal got on the board for Inter Miami with his first-ever tally for the Herons.
Playing in the final game of his 18-year career, Higuain started and captained Inter Miami in the defeat. He went 55 minutes before being substituted, and came close to making the score 1-1 prior to being replaced with a half-volley that was pushed off the crossbar.
