Sources: Inter Miami attacker Edison Azcona to be loaned to El Paso Locomotive
The Dominican Republic youth international is currently nursing an ankle injury, but will soon head to the USL Championship in the hopes of earning more minutes
Edison Azcona is fresh off of helping the Under-20 Dominican Republic national team make history, and will soon aim to carry that momentum back to the club level.
Not with Inter Miami, though.
Azcona is expected to join USL Championship side El Paso Locomotive on loan from Inter Miami, sources have told Miami Total Futbol. The 18-year-old attacker is currently nursing an ankle injury picked up during the recently-concluded Under-20 Concacaf Championship, but the move should be finalized once he has recovered.
Azcona is in search of more playing time after earning just 15 minutes in one MLS appearance this season. He has totaled 59 minutes in five games with Inter Miami since signing a Homegrown Player deal in 2021.
While the South Florida side has a loaded schedule in July that is sure to see head coach Phil Neville tap deep into his bench, Azcona was unlikely to feature much. He has been behind the likes of Ariel Lassiter, Robert Taylor, Indiana Vassilev, and Emerson Rodriguez as an attacking option.
The Herons also recently signed an experienced player in French winger Corentin Jean, further diminishing Azcona’s chances of seeing the field for Inter Miami.
Azcona just helped the Dominican Republic reach both the next U-20 World Cup and Olympics for the first time, serving as captain while the nation finished as runner-up at the U-20 Concacaf Championship in Honduras. The talented teenager played a significant part in the success there by also scoring the winner in a 5-4 victory over El Salvador in the Round of 16 and netting the equalizer in a 2-2 draw with Guatemala in the semifinals.
Azcona also converted his spot kick in the ensuing penalty shootout with Guatemala that saw the Dominican Republic reach the competition final, which ended 6-0 in the United States’ favor.
He did not play in the one-sided championship game due to that aforementioned ankle injury, but his overall contributions saw him named to the tournament’s Best XI.
Coached by John Hutchinson, El Paso Locomotive is currently in fourth place in the Western Conference of the USL Championship. The team boasts a record of 8-6-6, scoring 38 goals while giving up 24.

Great hopefully more playing time will evolve his skills, perhaps the same should be done with Allan since we have 4 left backs, well 5 if one includes McVey, I think he'll start getting slotted next to Lowe, now that Gibbs is healthy and getting back in form!
