Sources: Gonzalo Higuain to miss season finale vs. New England Revolution
Inter Miami's star striker has been dealing with a "long-standing plantar fasciitis" problem and did not travel with the team to Boston on Saturday
Inter Miami’s 2021 season may not end until Sunday, but it is already over for Gonzalo Higuain.
Sources have told Miami Total Futbol that Higuain was not part of Inter Miami’s traveling delegation to Boston on Saturday, and as such will miss Sunday’s campaign finale against the New England Revolution. Inter Miami head coach Phil Neville cast some doubt over Higuain’s availability on Friday when previewing the game vs. the Revolution, stating that the Designated Player has been dealing with a “long-standing plantar fasciitis problem.”
“It probably originated when we went to play the two games on turf against Portland and Atlanta (about a month ago) ,” said Neville. “We are going to look at him. He did train this morning.”
With Higuain’s season over, the Argentine finishes his first full year in MLS with 12 goals and nine assists. Both those numbers are team highs. The star striker also made 28 starts in 30 appearances for the 11th-placed side in the Eastern Conference.
Higuain’s older brother, Federico, also did not travel with Inter Miami on Saturday after retiring from professional soccer in last weekend’s 3-1 loss to New York City FC. Starting goalkeeper Nick Marsman has also been ruled out of the upcoming affair at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts.
Some options to start up top in place of Gonzalo in Sunday’s showdown are Robbie Robinson and Julian Carranza. The returning Josh Penn could also be a possible option.
